|Puget Sound (Anacortes), Washington
July 23-28, 2017
Spend six days cycling along rugged coastlines, through lush forests, visiting quaint island villages as you explore the majestic San Juan Islands. Round out the trip with kayaking in Bowman Bay, and a Whale Watching tour at sunset. The Puget Sound and San Juan Islands are home to orca whales, grey whales, bald eagles, sea lions, and seals. Last year we saw tons of whales on our whale adventure, in fact we all ended up with Whale-Whiplash! The Olympic Mountains reach up to the horizon on the west while the white tops of the Cascades and Mt. Baker glimmer in the east. Our basecamp will be The Majestic Inn and Spa providing luxury accommodations with a farm-to-table restaurant and an award-winning spa. Each morning wake up your body with a Strong Balance Class to ensure you are warmed up for the day’s ride. Explore the natural beauty of this remote corner of the country and unwind from daily life while the Women’s Quest staff take care of all the details.
All activities are geared at body, mind, or spirit, allowing you to simultaneously refresh and enrich all aspects of your vital self. This trip is designed for those looking for a true adventure, ready to experience the perspective of life from above the handlebars. Whether it’s cycling past sweet smelling lavender farms, hopping off your bike to taste local food, or staring up into the old growth forests, this trip will keep you smiling the entire ride! Between Cycling around the San Juans, Kayaking in the Puget Sound, Strong balance classes with Brenna, Whale Watching, Wine Tasting, (and eating ice cream) this is bound to be an incredible and transformative retreat.

What is a typical day?
Sunday – We kick off our bike trip with a cruiser ride around historic Anacortes and then over to Washington Park to take in the views of Mt. Baker and the Cascades, the Puget Sound, and get our first glimpse of the San Juan Islands. After our loop, we will head to our picnic dinner where we will sample local wines from some of the best Pacific Northwest wineries and get to know each other while taking in the views. We will then head back to our beautiful hotel to get settled before we rest up for our first big day of riding.
Monday – We have an early start on Monday to get to the Orcas Island ferry, but have plenty of time on the ferry to get our gear situated, eat a little something, and get our water bottles filled up. Once we arrive on Orcas we will ride along the waterfront for most of the ride. Orcas Island is known as “The Emerald Isle” with its lush, green forests and miles and miles of shoreline. We have multiple levels for this day and you can choose to take it easy or challenge yourself with a climb up Mt. Constitution for the incredible views. We will stop at the island village of Eastsound to take in local art and grab a bite to eat. After a big day, we will return to our hotel for some down time and a delicious dinner.
Tuesday – We will get our bodies ready for our ride with some stretching and Strong Balance Class, enjoy breakfast, and then roll out to meet the ferry. After a beautiful ferry ride over to Lopez Island, you will have the choice of two distances to pedal around the island before meeting at Vita’s Cafe to feast on their amazing sandwiches and huge cookies. We have a short pedal back to the ferry and head back to Anacortes. Once back at the hotel, you can choose to rest at the rooftop lounge, get a spa treatment, or head out to the waterfront before meeting everyone for dinner.
Wednesday – After waking up our bodies with Brenna’s Strong Balance Class, we will enjoy breakfast and get ourselves ready for an optional bike ride to Bowman Bay. This bike ride will take us down country roads, past forest lakes, and along the Sound. At Bowman Bay we will head out for a kayaking tour before heading back to Anacortes for our Whale Watching Tour. We will eat dinner on the boat while watching sea lions, whales, and the sunset.
Thursday – After breakfast, we will bike to the ferry and head to San Juan Island, home of Friday Harbor. We have multiple distances for this ride so you can choose to ride more, or spend more time checking out Friday Harbor with its art galleries, bookstores, and antique shops. We will have lunch in Friday Harbor before boarding the ferry to head back to Anacortes. We will have some much-deserved downtime to enjoy the spa, take in the views from the rooftop lounge, or hit happy hour before closing dinner.
Friday – On our last day we will visit the hidden gem of Guemes Island. A small ferry takes us the short distance across the water to visit this very quiet island. We will eat breakfast while lounging in the grass and then spin out our legs as we ride this little-known island. We will catch the ferry back to Anacortes to get our stuff ready to go back home.
What will the food by like?
Our meals will be delicious, fresh, organic meals. 5th Street Bistro is located in our hotel, a farm-to-table restaurant focusing on local products, including Northwest wines and local microbrews. There is an outdoor rooftop lounge with breathtaking views where we can enjoy our meals if the weather permits. We will also be dining at the best restaurants Anacortes has to offer and feast of delicious crab cakes, fresh seafood, and amazing salads! We are able to provide for any allergies, food sensitivities, or diet preferences with prior notice.
Women’s Quest will includes all breakfasts and dinners, lunches will be on your own to give you a chance to try some of the amazing food and restaurants on the islands.
Do I have to be experienced at yoga or Strong Balance?
The retreat is open to all levels of yoga experience, from fresh beginner to the practiced yogini, as each will practice according to individual need.
What will the yoga be like?
We begin each adventure-filled Women’s Quest day with a combination of Colleen’s unique “Awakening the Senses Yoga” and Brenna’s Strong Balance Class. Colleen’s yoga is a gentle but powerful practice which draws inspiration from Gyrokinesis, Qigong, and Tai Chi, and is a perfect way to prepare the mind, body and senses for the activities of the day. Brenna’s Strong Balance Class helps you open your hips and shoulders, while lengthening your spine, and strengthening your core. Pulling from yoga, pilates, corrective exercise, and functional movement, this class gets your body ready to take on whatever the day has planned. Feel taller and more balanced after you flow through the exercises and let your mind rest with a small mediation at the end of each class.

What will the weather be like?
Late July is the PERFECT time to visit the Pacific Northwest. Sunshine, blackberries, cool breezes off the water and perfect riding temperature. Average temperatures for this time of year is just about 75 degrees. Mornings can be a little brisk so it is best to have a light jacket to wear at the beginning of rides and also something to snuggle into in the evenings.
Do I have to do all of the activities?
No! All activities and outings are optional. This is YOUR retreat. We encourage you do to what feels most nurturing and right for you. You will be fully supported in doing as much or as little as you choose. All of our activities will be guided by expert staff, and instruction and support will be offered for every activity according to your experience level. Plus Majestic Inn has a SPA (need I say more!!!)
Am I in good enough shape to do the retreat?
Most Likely! We adapt to all levels of fitness. Since we break into riding groups we can accommodate just about any skill and fitness level. We teach you practical skills for biking-useful for both beginners and experienced riders. We have a variety of route options for biking, and for walking/hiking/running. Groups are formed according to each woman’s level of fitness, experience, and desire to challenge herself. We do suggest that you start a training or workout program before you come so that you can get the most out of the retreat. Please ride your bike at home and be comfortable on the saddle, knowing how to easily shift gears and be ready to ride upon arrival.
What will the cycling be like?
Our first and last days of riding will be a little shorter giving us time to get know each other and our bikes. Monday and Thursday will be bigger riding days with options for climbing and/or longer rides. There will always be shorter routes available and everyone will have maps and route descriptions. We will ride as a group or split into smaller groups if needed. A sag-wagon will accompany the group on most rides in case you need a break or to carry any extra gear. (We often make blackberry and photo stops)
What will the bike rentals be like?
We highly suggest you bring your own bike because rental bikes are never as comfortable as your own bike.
But. Skagit Cycle Center has a limited supply of road bikes, (2 in each size)
We will be renting high-end road bikes from Skagit Cycles. These are great bikes and if you don’t want the hassle and or expense of shipping your bike you can rent and still have a great ride. Bike rental fees are not included in the retreat fees and run approximately $65.00 per day.
Road bikes are limited but they have a bunch of hybrid bikes if the road bikes are sold out
Can I bring my own bike?
Yes! You are welcome to fly with your bike or ship it via BIKEFLIGHTS. Bikeflights is around $50 each way. If you are a bike enthusiast we encourage bringing your own bike over renting because you have developed a wonderful relationship with your bike, you learn to trust it and most importantly you are used to your own bike seat. You can either get a hard sided case or BikeFlights has a cardboard bike case that looks like a huge cheese wedge that keeps bikes safe and sound
The cost of traveling with your bike has gone up significantly and airlines are charging anywhere from $50.00 to $200.00 or more each direction these days to travel with your bike. As a cheaper alternative, we recommend shipping your bike via BikeFlights which will cost you in the vicinity of $50 each way. Remember, you will also need to pay for the bike rebuild once it arrives in Washington, which costs around $50. It’s not inexpensive either way but if you have a special relationship with your bike you may want to share this amazing week with your trusty friend. Mail your bike 10 days in advance to our local bike shop. If you need your bike to be built or packed for you, please note that there will be additional costs.
You can send your bike one week in advance to:
