Plant a Garden… Inside and Out

This spring, plant a garden, both figuratively and literally. Plant a seed, nurture it, watch it grow and harvest its fruits. It doesn’t really matter where you live, you can plant a garden.

For those spatially challenged, roof tops, walls of water, even a single clay pot in a window, can all be your plot of earth to watch the world unfold before you. Some plants that do well indoors in limited space are herbs (basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, etc.) and flowers (geraniums, Christmas cactus, African violets, cyclamen and primrose) and some bulbs (hyacinth and narcissus).

If you have the space outdoors, there is nothing like a vegetable garden to bring the seasons into your life. Greens, zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, corn, strawberries, melons, carrots, green beans, peas, they are all available with a little tender care and patience. Whether indoors or out, getting your hands in the dirt and bringing a seed to life is as grounding as it is rewarding.

And while you are at it, why not plant a seed or two of your own in the garden of your heart? Think about what it is you’d like to harvest over the next few months— a new job, a relationship, more time to enjoy your life, more money. Spring is a great time to plant the seeds of these changes.

Just like a vegetable or a flower, planting the seed is very important, but it is only the first step. Once planted, you must provide the seed with a nourishing environment (instead of water, our heart seeds need positive thoughts and reassuring beliefs so they can blossom), weeding from time to time (tossing out old negative beliefs that interfere with the seed’s growth), and plenty of room to blossom (don’t crowd your seed with too much stress, too many activities or too many other seeds.) Nurture your seed and watch it slowly grow. Soon you will be able to harvest its fruits in a better life for you.

What are your seeds?

Earth Day – April 22, 2012

By Colleen Cannon

Take a deep breath.  Part of the reason you can is because today is Earth Day.  Earth Day is a worldwide celebration of the earth and an annual reminder that we must cherish and protect our planet with all we have.  Earth Day was established in 1970 and sparked the passage of the Clear Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the legislation creating the Environmental Protection Agency.

I call the earth Pachamama which is a goddess revered by the indigenous people of the Andes.

This Earth day blessing idea (which I actually do every day) came to me many years ago. I was out on a hike one winter day with my friend Ray Browning who had these cool Salomon boots on. With every step he would leave an angel print because on the bottom of his boots there was an angel carved out in the sole. I thought this was the coolest thing EVER. I wanted to put them on the bottom of my shoes but I could not figure it out or draw that well so I decided that I would “Infuse my Shoes”

I imagined that on the bottom of my shoes were these blessing pads and everywhere that I ran the earth would feel blessed and loved. (like giving the earth a massage)

I did this 8 mile loop almost everyday and did not think much about it until there was a fire in our neighborhood.

(A controlled burn by the Forest Service that got out of control… Go figure)

The fire did not cross over where I had run with my “Blessing Pad” shoes. So this intention of love from the bottom of my shoes (and the bottom of my heart) that I had set in motion really did help.

So try it!!! Let’s all make time to honor our planet this year, if not publicly, than in a personal appreciation for all our earth gives to us.

April’s New Moon

By Colleen Cannon

My very good angel, fairy, astrologer, gem friend (who I have known for more then 25 years), Cindy Morris always does a Full Moon and New Moon astrological check-in report. I am thrilled to see what is up with the stars because it validates so much of what I am feeling… like Spring Fever!

Following is part of Cindy’s new moon report. Find out more about Cindy and her books here.

The NEW MOON in TAURUS reminds us to turn to NATURE to refocus and reconnect to the roots of our value and worth. To know that we are divine beings living on this gorgeous planet, sentient beings playing out our SOUL’s story on a planet filled with abundant, magnificent LIFE. Taurus directs you to identify your true value and worth. Do you over-identify with money, with your “possessions” (you’ll be turning all that over when you dis-incarnate, so enjoy them while you’re here!). Are you enjoying what you “own” or are you always on to the new thing that you think will satisfy? Taurus times always remind us to recalibrate your value and worth to what is really and truly valuable to you, and only you will know that!

Use this sensual time of TAURUS to connect with your ALL your senses, feeling your earthiness and deliciousness existence in your human body. That’s what Spring Fever is about–wanting to experience the joys and pleasures that the body can experience. Sniff around, following inner directives to inhale the verdant life that is breathing all around you.

Break Through and Bloom

By Colleen Cannon

“Live in the Sunshine, Swim the sea, Drink the wild air…”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Spring is a great time of year to get out and hike, bike, ride horses or just look around as nature comes to life. The earth is waking up and beginning to show off her colors.

I love watching our first flowers come out in the Colorado Rockies. They are these little fuzzy purple blooms called Pasque flowers or Spring Crocus. They are densely covered with white silky hairs that remind me of a fur coat, which is a good thing because they get snowed on often in the spring.

I like to think of these flowers this time of year or any time I need some kind of pick-me-up or breakthrough energy. These tough little POWER flowers must break through hard, frozen ground and withstand freezing temperatures and snow—and they still manage to bloom.

So when you need a little energy or are feeling timid about something, keep this little flower in the back of your mind and tell yourself, “I can do it!” Break through and BLOOM!

Getting outside in nature will help you balance your energies. The start of spring is a great excuse to cancel meetings and hit the trails. If you’ve been cooped up inside for months or, like me, you’ve been going outside wearing 5 layers of clothes to stay warm, spring is the time you finally get to go outside in shorts!

Spring is recess for the planet and for all of us. So watch the miracles of spring unfold… and behold!
